Restless leg syndrome (or RLS) is usually considered a sleep disorder as it often prevents sufferers from getting a good night’s sleep. RLS is actually a nervous system disorder as it causes a perceived urge to move the legs. Many seniors suffer from restless leg syndrome and it can lead to sleep deprivation and stressful feelings during the day. In some cases, it can even lead to depression. September 23rd is observed as Restless Leg Syndrome Awareness Day to spread awareness about this uncomfortable condition that can have potentially serious health consequences.

Read on for more information about RLS and what to do if your loved one suffers from it.

What are the symptoms of restless leg syndrome?
The main symptom of restless leg syndrome is painful, itchy, or uncomfortable sensations in the legs. Though the discomfort is mainly in the legs, it can also happen in the arms or other parts of the body. Generally, the pain and discomfort worsens when a person is at rest sitting or lying down. Also, they can be worse at night which can lead to insomnia or a poor night’s sleep.

What causes restless leg syndrome?
RLS has a few different causes and many seniors can be at a higher risk for developing it. One cause is chronic medical conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, kidney failure, diabetes, or iron deficiency. Another cause is certain medications such as antidepressants and antihistamines. If your loved one has RLS, certain triggers can make symptoms worse such as drinking alcohol and sleep deprivation.

Can restless leg syndrome be treated?
RLS often goes undiagnosed because the symptoms can come and go and they can differ in severity from person to person. Sometimes, the pain and discomfort from RLS may be seen as normal or as a result of activities such as exercising or walking. The truth is that RLS is a treatable condition and if your loved one is showing symptoms of RLS, they should bring them up to their doctor. RLS can be treated with certain medications and/or lifestyle changes such as cutting back on caffeine and/or alcohol, establishing an exercise routine, and maintaining a healthy sleep schedule. Other treatments that may be effective include warm or cool compresses on the legs, taking warm baths, leg massage, or vibrating pads that are specially made for RLS.
