Be consistent
Being consistent with your child’s bedtime routine is important because it will help train their body to sleep and wake at the same time. If they wake up at any point in the middle of the night, gently guide them back to their bed, tuck them in, and tell them it is bedtime. Children have the gift of stalling, whether they are asking for water, want to talk, or are ready to play. Whatever you do, do not cave into their requests because this will only lead to a setback in the bedtime routine you are trying to create.
Take turns with your partner
There is no reason both parents should be exhausted due to a lack of sleep. When your little one gets out of bed, take turns with your spouse to put him back into bed. By taking turns, at least one parent will be alert and fully rested, allowing them to take on their parenting responsibilities much easier than if they were up all night.
Start a sleep diary or hypnogram
Children with health conditions that cause them pain, such as cerebral palsy, may wake up because of pain or stiffness. Keeping a sleep diary or hypnogram will help you keep track of the times your child is in a deep sleep and when their bodies should be repositioned without completely waking them up.
Adjust the bedding
Some children tend to push the covers off of them while they sleep, causing them to wake up because they are cold. While other kids like the comfort of being surrounded by pillows and other comfortable bedding accessories, such as a body pillow. Position their bedding in a way that will keep them cozy and sleep better at night. If the child likes to kick their bedding off, you may want to tuck it into the mattress to prevent them from getting cold in the middle of the night.
Be patient
When a new bedtime routine is introduced, it often takes several tries before the child begins going to bed and staying asleep throughout the night. Being patient and consistent with the routine is the only way to create a successful bedtime schedule. Stick with the routine for at least a month in order to see positive results from your hard work.
Bedtime for special needs children can be difficult, but by using these tips, you will find it much easier to get your little one to sleep throughout the night, which also means more sleep for you.
