3 Fun Toddler Crafts For Special Needs Children

by | Mar 22, 2017

Toddlers are notorious for having a short attention span and the willingness to not sit still for long periods of time. For some special needs children that are of toddler age, these tasks may be especially true. The good news is, there are some simple and engaging crafts that you and/or the pediatric home care providers can do with your toddler that do not require highly refined skills and that only require a few materials.

The following crafts are perfect for toddler age special needs children and they will help to build creative thinking.

Be a Superhero

Sometimes all it takes is a simple costume and accessories to spark a child’s imagination and you don’t need expensive store bought costumes to help your child be the superhero. Use card stock paper or construction paper to trace a mask on, then cut the mask out and let your toddler decorate it. With your help or the help of the pediatric home care provider, your child can use feathers, paint, crayons and/or stickers to create a one-of-a-kind superhero mask. To make the cape, simpley use safety pins to attach it to the back of the child’s shirt.

Build Fine Motor Skills

One of the simplest, yet most fun ways to help special needs children build their fine motor skills is by finger painting. Yes, finger painting is messy, but you and your pediatric home care provider can control the mess by designating a special area on the floor, covering it with a mat and/or a sheet and using homemade paints that will wash off easily. The best benefit of finger painting is not only that it helps to build fine motor skills, but you get adorable artwork to decorate your home with.

Hand Print Crafts

Artwork that has been made with your child’s hand print is not only adorable, but they are also excellent keepsakes. Hand print crafts will also encourage your child to use their creativity as well as their motor skills when tracing their hands. Trace both of your child’s hands to create the petals for a flower, and then trace their foot to make the stem. Trace their hand on a piece of brown construction paper to make a Thanksgiving turkey or simply trace both hands and both feet on colorful paper and place in a frame.

These are only a few of the creative ways to get special needs children active, to help build their fine motor skills and to help them learn new skills. Talk with your pediatric home care provider or nurse about helping your special needs child express their creativity by assisting them with these and other crafts.
