What Can You Do with Some Time for Respite Care?

All too often, family caregivers find that they have some time for rest and relaxation, yet they have no idea what to do. Or worse, they put off seeking help with respite care because they don’t know what to do with that time.

Take a Vacation

When is the last time that you took a vacation? If you’re a typical family caregiver, it’s probably been quite some time. Your vacation might be a simple weekend getaway a few towns over or you might take that whirlwind tour of Europe that you’ve been dreaming of for years. The reality is that it’s your choice and it’s likely dependent on your other commitments and your budget.

Tackle Home Projects

As a family caregiver, you’re likely to have quite a few projects that have built up at your own home. With a bit of respite time on your hands, you can focus on those projects and not have to worry about your elderly loved one because she’s in good hands so that you can get away.

Catch up on Work

Some family caregivers have to put work on the back burner periodically in order to be there for their elderly loved ones. But if you have a big project coming up that you can’t delegate, respite care is a perfect solution. You’ll have the time and the energy that you need in order to focus fully on your tasks without having to split your attention.

Meditate or Otherwise Capture Some Zen

It’s one thing to try to start a meditation practice or some other method of relaxing during your normal daily activities, but when you can focus on learning how to relax in a different setting you can have better results. With time to spend solely on learning how to listen to your breath, you can get really good at that. Then, when you take the skill home, you’re more likely to use it.

Anything You Want

The big key here is that if you need to have a weekend, or longer, to go to your own home and sleep for a few long, uninterrupted hours, you can do that. If you need to sit out by the pool and catch up on all your favorite authors, you can do that. Whatever it is that you need and want to do, you can do with respite time.

If you’re still not sure, try starting small with a respite afternoon. Have your loved one’s elder care providers ready for the afternoon and do some exploring about how respite feels for you.
