Occasional dry mouth might not seem like that big of a deal, and you could very well be right. But if dry mouth is becoming much more frequent or intense, you may want to talk to your loved one’s doctor or dentist about it. Doing so could prevent your loved one from dealing with some of these more serious issues.
Potential for Gum Disease or Infection
The interior of your mouth is meant to stay moist. When that doesn’t happen, as is the case when your loved one is dealing with dry mouth, your loved one’s gums can dry out. Your loved one might be at more risk for developing gingivitis or other gum infections and ailments. If your loved one is already at risk for some of these gum conditions, preventing dry mouth is especially important.
Possible Tooth Loss or Decay
As your loved one’s gums become dried out and possibly damaged, they can pull away from her teeth, causing them to loosen a bit. Because your loved one’s teeth are also meant to stay in a saliva-filled environment, having a dry mouth can also contribute to tooth decay. If your loved one’s teeth are already damaged, they’re even more susceptible.
Difficulty Eating or Swallowing
When your loved one’s mouth isn’t producing enough saliva, then eating and swallowing become a bit more difficult. Depending on the cause of your loved one’s dry mouth issues, she may have difficulty producing saliva even when she’s chewing and eating. If that’s the case, your loved one’s doctor or dentist may have some other suggestions.
Discomfort or Distraction While Resting
Even if your loved one isn’t experiencing significant pain or other problems from her dry mouth problem, it can be distracting or even uncomfortable for her. This can be a problem whether she’s trying to rest and get some sleep or she’s trying to concentrate on a favorite activity. Dealing with the problem now, when it’s simply uncomfortable, is preferable to waiting for the problem to become larger.
Having elder home care services providers available when you’re not, can help you to keep on top of any dry mouth issues for your loved one.
