by | Mar 3, 2023

Enrolling in Medicare can be a confusing process, but it’s important to know when and how to sign up in order to get the coverage you need. This guide will tell you everything you need to know about enrolling in Medicare, from when you can sign up to what kind of coverage is available.

When can I sign up for Medicare?

You can sign up for Medicare three months before your 65th birthday, the month of your 65th birthday, or three months after your 65th birthday. If you wait until after your 65th birthday to sign up, you may have to pay a late enrollment penalty.

What is Medicare?

Medicare is a health insurance program for people 65 and older, as well as younger individuals suffering from disabilities. Medicare has four parts: Part A, Part B, Part C, and Part D.

Part A covers hospital insurance, and is usually premium-free if you or your spouse worked to pay Medicare taxes for at least 10 years.

Part B covers medical insurance. You usually have to pay a monthly premium for this coverage.

Part C is sometimes called Medicare Advantage. This covers both hospital and medical insurance. You get this coverage through a private insurance company that has contracts with Medicare.

Part D covers prescription drugs. You usually have to pay a monthly premium for this coverage as well.
